Why Persian Rugs
Image: President Obama with Pope Francis in Vatican.
Persian rugs have the longest history dating back 550 B.C.E. and have originated from the Persian Empire (aka the Achaemenid Empire) that lasted from approximately 559 B.C.E. to 331 B.C.E. At its height, the Empire encompassed the vast regions that are modern-day Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. These countries are today known as "rug belt" countries that are known for Oriental rugs.
It is widely accepted that initially some of the Persian artisans emigrated from Persia to other "rug belt" regions and continued their art of weaving.
From the West to the East, and from political leaders to significant religious leaders, Persian rugs have been depicted as a status symbol and opulence throughout millennia (even to this day).
